Hidden Barriers: A new documentary series

Investigating the challenges that autistic people face in their everyday lives and what organisations could do to remove them

What is Hidden Barriers?

Filmmakers are putting together a series of documentaries for the North East Autism Society to shine a light on the challenges that autistic and neurodivergent people face in their daily lives.

From airports to buses, banks to hospitals, organisations can inadvertently put up barriers that can prevent autistic people accessing their services.

Our series of films highlight those barriers and explains how services could be made more accessible for everyone. See the films below.

Hidden Barriers: Autism and Airports

Airports can be difficult places for autistic people, who can find them confusing, frightening or overwhelming. This documentary investigates the support that airports have to put in place, how it works, and where the system can let people down.

Hidden Barriers: Autism and GP Surgeries

Why do autistic people suffer poorer health than the general population? One reason is the challenge of going to the doctors, from booking an appointment to the sensory challenges of the surgery and the risk of being misunderstood by medics. This film explains why GP surgeries are so difficult for autistic people and suggests simple ways to make them more accessible.
